Dear Friends, Greetings from Jack and Isa! We appreciate your friendship very much. Thanks for praying for us over the many years we have been in Papua New Guinea! Thank you for praying for us as we travelled too. What a contrast between London Heathrow and Haia! We were sad to leave our dear Pawaian believers behind. They sangwith us then Jack prayed. They hugged us and we said our goodbyes. As the little Cessna plane was taking off from the simple grass airstrip in the jungle all the believers were standing in a line by the side of the strip waving with their hands up in the air and fingers pointing to the sky. “We will see you up there in glory!!!” That was their farewell to us. It was quite emotional. There was no one (apart from the Lord) who cared about us in London! Our flight from Papua New Guinea went well overall. We did have some hiss and bother with the new security arrangements at London Heathrow. They told us we were only allowed one piece of hand luggage on the flight to Manchester. Of course, on all the previous flights we had carried more than this but all was well in the end. We arrived on time in Manchester and all our luggage arrived with us. It was good to get our feet on the ground again and lovely to see Sandra and her two youngsters waiting for us. When we got to the house Daniel was waiting with Jack’s mum She looked well and was not too emotional this time She’s 91 We are so thankful that the Lord has spared her so that we can enjoy her for a while. We have seen very little of her all our married life. We are gradually getting settled. It takes longer than we remembered. There seem to me more regulations these days and we have to discover them before we can comply with them. There have been many changes in the last four years so that what we thought would be simple matters to take care of have proved difficult because some places have closed down, some procedures have changed, offices have moved and we feel a bit lost in our home town! We’re getting there though. The worst part is not being able to get set up properly with e-mail. Please pray for the Pawaian believers as they are on their own. Pray that they will stand strong and enjoy God’s word together. There is a lot of outside influence that can creep in so we need to uphold those believers daily. Pray that the leaders will not be slow to take a lead. They naturally tend to hold back. Pray that they. will see their responsibility to guard the truth as they are the only ones in their part of the world that know the truth. We have been in contact with New Tribes Mission UK and they are anxious to discuss our future plans with us. We expect to visit there for a conference June. Once we are settled and adjusted to this new life we hope to be able to visit as many of you as possible so please keep in touch with us about that We look forward to heanng from you some time. We close with warm Christian greetings Jack and Isa Douglas
Feb 2007 Dear Friends, It's hard to believe that four years have gone by since we left England and that it is time for furlough again. But that is the truth and we find ourselves preparing to fly half-way around the world once more. The people had a farewell party for us last week. The first call of the day came at five in the morning with someone blowing a whistle and shouting out for everyone to get started. There were hundreds of people here from different parts of the tribe. Some had traveled from the Gulf Distrkt. They all wanted to come and tell us how sad they are and yet how thankful they are, We were pushing hard to get things sorted out and couldn't really spare the time to chat with so many. It was hard. During the party, they had a short presentation they wanted to put on. They gave us a big, flaming bamboo torch and told us we had to go off to a small road to the side and "find" people who were hiding along the sides of the road. Then, still carrying the flaming bamboo torch, we brought them into the middle of the crowd. The MC explained that we had been the ones to bring the light of God's word to these people so they could come out of spiritual darkness. We then handed the torch back to the people to signify that they are now responsible to carry the torch to others. Representatives of ALL the clans came to say farewell to us on behalf of their group. That was a good idea in that it did save every' single person having to come up to us to shake hands Or hug us. Each clan gave us an envelope which contained a letter with their parting wishes and accompanied by a gift of money! Some said the money was to buy food if we were hungry on the way home! It was all very moving and hard to take, especially with it being such a long ceremony. They had killed several big pigs for the occasion so after the formalities, the mumu was opened and the feasting began. It was a busy day. David and Carla were able to come and they brought two visitors with them. David was included in the ceremony too. Brandon and Austin had been able to come on a flight the day before when a lot of food was brought in from Goroka so they stayed overnight. Ashley came with mum and dad. The weather stayed good all day long so they were able to fly back to Goroka quite late in the day. It was quite a long day. We have been steadily taking our home' apart and using the materials to build a small extension to Jack's office. That will give us a cosy cabin to stay in when we return, Lord willing, to visit the Pawaians one day. This cabin has proved to be more work than we bargained for but it is almost completed. Thousands of sheets of paper, representing tens of years of work have had to be burned. Items that it would not be worth flying out of the tribe and that are of no use to the local people have been destroyed. It has been a very emotional and trying time for us. It has not been easy for the Pawaians either. They shall miss us more than we shall miss them, if that is possible. Our tickets have been on order for months now but there is still no sign of them. We have been assured that they will be issued this week so we are hoping and praying that this will happen. We plan to fly to England via Australia and Singapore. We hope to arrive there mid-April, Lord willing. Our address will be as before when we have been on furlough: 129, Balmoral Road, Whitehaven, Cumbria, CA28 6XA , England Please use the same e-mail address as usual and we shall get set up with a provider in England as soon as possible. We hope you will keep in touch. Phone number to follow once we know what it will be. We look forward to meeting up with as many of you as possible so please contact us once we get home and we'll see what we can arrange. We do not know what our future will hold. We do feel that the middle of the jungle is not the place to be living at our age though we would dearly love to say in many ways. We have begun discussions with the NTM staff in the UK as to how we might best be of help. We do hope to visit the Pawaians in the future and hope to produce helpful Bible study materials for them even though it will prove difficult to check those. We would very much appreciate your prayers that the Lord would make our way plain. So now we face the culture shock of moving back into the "developed world" and it scares us. The weather in England scares us. The speed of life, knowing that many things will have changed and wondering what life holds for us is not easy to face so we ask your prayers as we make this adjustment once again. We commend the Pawaian believers to you once again. Please continue to pray for them as they now face the responsibility of guarding and spreading the gospel in this part of the world. There are many adversaries. Your fellowship over many years has been a blessing to us and we k now the Lord took notice as you did it all for Him. We count ourselves really blessed to have friends like you. Yours in His safe keeping, Jack and Isa Douglas
